Message from Northants Police

We are aware of recent posts on social media in relation to vehicles obstructing pavements in the village. The most recent being this afternoon on Bouverie Road. The location was visited and two vehicles which were blocking the path were moved and advice given to the owners (and also to one of the owners employers due to the location being visited for work purposes). There was also a social media post last week in relation to a vehicle blocking the pavement on Back Lane, again the location was visited and it was established the vehicle was awaiting repair at a nearby garage, so words of advice were given and the vehicle was moved immediately.

It's an offence to obstruct a pavement, contrary to Regulation 103 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. Rule 145 of the Highway Code also states You MUST NOT drive on or over a pavement, footpath or bridleway except to gain lawful access to property, or in the case of an emergency.

It is also an offence to leave a vehicle on a road (including the pavement) in a dangerous position, contrary to s.22 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

It's important to keep the pavement clear for pedestrians, especially those with mobility challenges, parents with strollers, and individuals with visual impairments who rely on clear pathways. Obstructing the pavement not only inconveniences pedestrians but also compromises their safety.

If you witness an obstruction please contact police on 101 or alternatively email myself on the below so i can make enquiries and if on duty will visit the location. We do have powers to recover vehicles that are causing an obstruction and won't hesitate in doing this if we are unable to make contact with the vehicles owner or repeat offenders.

Many thanks

Paul Hurst
